The year 2008 has been an incredible year for India in the field of Atomic energy. India has made a significant contribution to the International civil nuclear cooperation. India’s energy security is also strengthened because of this. There are several issues to be dealt with in the present situation. The increasing population has led to an increase in the demand for power. Now, India has a larger share in the overall electricity generation by nuclear power. Our planet is facing serious threat in terms of climate change. This is obvious because of the increase in the overall global temperature and an increase in the overall sea level due to melting of snow. This clearly proves that we should take into consideration, the climatic change while trying to meet the growing demand for electricity. Our country has vast deposits of thorium, which should be used in heavy water reactors, to increase energy production. According to the Indian nuclear power programme, in addition to the operating seventeen reactors, 3 heavy water reactors, 2 light water reactors and 1 fast breeder reactor are in advanced stages of construction.
