Atomic energy has diverse applications in wire range of areas. Today atomic energy is used to drive submarines, which are called nuclear submarines. These subs are a powerful resource for the navy. The naval force of the United States has the largest fleet of submarines. Several disasters have also occurred due to them. The designers and engineers have designed and built nine ‘unique nuclear submarines’ in U.S. They were employed during the well known ‘Cold War’, when there was a clash between the United States and the Soviet Union for dominance under the sea. Nuclear submarines have an upper hand over conventional submarines in many ways. First of all, being independent of air, it does not need frequent surfacing as in ordinary submarines. They can stay under water for more than 30 years, provided alternate means for food and oxygen are arranged. The speed of these atomic energy powered subs is extremely superior over the normal diesel powered subs, and their cruising radius is large. The only minor disadvantages are that the former generate more noise and are much more expensive compared to the latter. The cost of one nuclear submarines can be used to buy nearly ten diesel powered subs.
