Future of atomic energy

The socio economic growth rate is indicated by the per capita consumption of electric energy. This shows that an uninterrupted power generation is mandatory for the development of any nation. This power supply has to be met by non conventional sources as the conventional sources have got limitations to meet the growing needs. The scientists and engineers of the DAE are meticulously carrying out the Indian Nuclear Program, thanks to Dr. Homi Bhabha, who initiated it. In Indian nuclear power reactors, the naturally occurring elements, Uranium and Thorium are utilized. In view of step by step expansion of nuclear power generation, India chooses to adopt the closed cycle. Self sufficiency has been achieved in the Nuclear Science and technology. Today, 67% of the power generation is by means of coal. Burning of coal releases Sulphur, which creates environmental problems. Power generation is also by means of Hydel power plants, which are not very dependable because of erratic monsoons. Hence the future requirements of the nation can be met by tapping the nuclear resources. Unlike other non conventional resources, atomic power plants are suitable for power generation on a large scale.
