Have you ever realized that everything around us is made up of atoms?? Just like alphabets constitute the English language, atoms make up the whole universe. And the most fascinating part is that, all these atoms, no matter what they are a part of, have the same basic components. It is just their orientation and the way they are grouped, decides the properties of an element. When atoms lose or gain electrons, are called ions. The subatomic particles of an atom are held together by electromagnetic forces. Atoms exist in groups of two or more, which are called molecules. The chemical properties of an element are due to the molecules. Democritus gave the idea of an atom in 530 B.C. Since then, there has been no looking back. Atoms are so tiny that they cannot be seen with the naked eye. Their diameter is approximately 1 x 10-10 meters.
